If you're paid through an umbrella, ask whether it's SafeRec accredited

Most contractors don't spend much time thinking about their umbrella company. The money arrives, the payslip looks roughly right, and there are more pressing things to worry about. I understand that. But there's a question worth asking, and most people never do.

How do you know your deductions are correct?

Not roughly correct. Actually correct. How do you know that what was taken from your pay matches what was reported to HMRC on your behalf?

Your payslip tells you what the deductions were. But your payslip comes from the umbrella. It shows you what the umbrella says it did. That's not the same as independent confirmation that it did it.

HMRC is Closing In on Non-Compliant Payrolls

Most umbrella companies process payroll correctly. But some don't, and the consequences for workers can be serious.

If an umbrella is mishandling deductions, underpaying tax, or operating in a way that doesn't comply with HMRC's requirements, you may have no idea until something goes wrong. By the time HMRC starts asking questions, the umbrella may have closed down and the people running it may be long gone. That's not a hypothetical. It has happened, more than once, to contractors who had no reason to suspect anything was wrong.

The umbrella sector has had a compliance problem for years. Some providers have competed on price by cutting corners on tax. Workers caught up in those arrangements don't always find out until the damage is done.

What changed in April 2026

New legislation came into force in April 2026 that makes agencies and end clients jointly liable if an umbrella in their supply chain fails to account correctly for tax. Most of the conversation around this has focused on what it means for businesses. That's understandable, but it misses something.

The legislation exists because non-compliant umbrellas cause real harm. Workers are at the front of that queue. If your deductions aren't being handled correctly, you're the one who has paid the price, often before anyone else even knows there's a problem.

What SafeRec does

SafeRec is an independent payroll verification system. When a payroll is processed through a SafeRec-accredited umbrella, an independent record is generated automatically. It shows what was deducted from your pay, when, and whether it matches what was submitted to HMRC.

You can access that record yourself. You don't need to request it. You don't need to wait for anyone to send it to you. It exists independently of the umbrella company, which means it can't be altered after the fact.

That's a meaningful difference from a payslip. A payslip tells you what the umbrella says happened. A SafeRec record tells you what an independent system verified actually happened.

What you should do

Ask your umbrella whether it's SafeRec accredited. It's a straightforward question and you're entitled to a straight answer.

If it is, ask how to access your verification records or simply login to Payslip Buddy. You should be able to do that without any involvement from the umbrella.

If it isn't, ask why not. There's no good reason for a compliant umbrella to avoid independent verification. The only umbrellas with something to fear from transparency are the ones that aren't doing things correctly.

You spend your working life earning money. The deductions taken from your pay fund your National Insurance record, your tax position, and in some cases your entitlement to statutory payments. You're entitled to know that those deductions are being handled properly, not because the umbrella says so, but because an independent system has verified it.

That's what SafeRec accreditation means. And it's why, if your umbrella can't offer it, it's worth asking why.
